Soil disposal 2050

Description

The soil storage map shows how many millimetres of water can be stored in the soil (water storage). The map was commissioned by the province of Zuid-Holland on the basis of the best available source data at that time. The map was delivered in September 2019 and has a resolution of 0.5 meters. There are two variants. One based on the KNMI current scenario and one based on the KNMI Warm-Hoog (WH2050) scenario. This is based on: 1) the height of the ground level (AHN3) 2) The Average Highest Groundwater Level (GHG) 3) the soil type card BOFEK2012 4) CAPSIM table that shows per soil type how many millimeters of water can be stored vertically. The soil recovery maps are risk and opportunity maps in one. During risk and opportunity dialogues for climate adaptation, the maps provide an overview of where high groundwater levels occur first in (long-term) precipitation. At the same time, the map shows opportunities for rainwater infiltration after heavy precipitation, to prevent flooding and to create a buffer for dry periods. Possibilities to apply the cards are: - Listing the risks and opportunities of the groundwater situation in an area during risk dialogues with area partners (municipalities, environmental services, water boards, farmers). The map gives a global picture, which is sufficient to conduct the conversation and then look for the substantive depth. - Investigating opportunities to retain water for longer in areas with high soil retention, to compensate for dry periods. - Providing a picture of the groundwater situation in the context of urban extensions, and whether this groundwater situation fits the intended functions (not too wet, not too dry). Note: the map is best applied at regional (water system) level. In urban areas, groundwater levels can fluctuate sharply due to subsurface objects and changing soil structure. At the level of detail, the map can also give a different picture compared to the actual situation because no local measurement data has been included in the National Water Model. The card is therefore less suitable for use at ditch, street or house level. However, the map gives an indication in which districts there is a lot of storage space in the bottom, and where there are possibilities to (temporarily) store water, such as with wadis and a lot of greenery.
