Description

Floods used to occur regularly. That is why the first inhabitants from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages (2500 to 500 years ago) often built their farms on a residential hill or house terp. Characteristic of the medieval mounds are the series of residential hills along peat rivers or newly constructed mining axes. The residential hills are often recognizable by a slight elevation in the landscape. Sometimes the elevation has been excavated or sunk and the residential hill is only recognizable by the subdivision.
