Amplification factor of historical extreme sea level events, 2010-2100, Nov. 2016

Description

This metadata descibes the vector data set showing the estimated multiplication factor, by which the frequency of flooding events of a given height changes between 2010 and 2100 due to projected regional sea relative level rise under the RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Values larger than 1 indicate an increase in flooding frequency. The estimated multiplication factor by which the frequency of extreme sea level (ESL) events increase in the future for events which historically have a return period of 100 years. Hence a value of 50 means that what is currently 1-in-100 year event will happen every 2 years due to a rise in mean sea level. The data has been adapted from Figure 4.12 of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere (SROCC) (The IPCC report can be downloaded here: https://www.ipcc.ch/srocc/download/) Sea-level data from tide gauges in the GESLA2 (Global Extreme Sea Level Analysis version 2) database (Woodworth et al., 2017). Sea-level rise projections are based on the CMIP5 ensemble of global climate models.
