Risk of subsurface compaction

Description

This grid file (with cell size 25x25 m) provides information for the whole of the Netherlands in five classes about the risk of soil compaction in relation to land use. A healthy soil consists of solid components and sufficient pores. These pores are important for transporting air and water through the soil and for plant roots. In soil compaction, for example due to excessive wheel loads, the pore volume is reduced. If soil compaction is too strong, the permeability and moisture storage capacity of the soil will decrease. This can lead to flooding (e.g. puddle formation) and to superficial runoff, peak load at polder pumping stations and to inundation of low-lying soils. There is also a greater risk of run-off of nutrients and plant protection products to surface water. A compacted soil is not or difficult to root, which reduces the crop yield.
