Patent applicants and patent applications; technology area
Description
This table contains data on the number of patent applicants and applications from the Netherlands at the European Patent Office (EPO) and at the Patent Centre Nederland (OCNL), the patent granting authority for the Netherlands which is part of the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). Patents can be granted to companies, universities, institutions or individuals as long as the invention meets the conditions for patentability. To qualify for a patent, an invention must be new, inventive and admissible for industrial application. Whether an invention meets these criteria is tested by a patent office such as the EPO or the OCNL. The patent office will eventually accept or reject the application.
The data on patent applicants and applications are broken down in this table by the technology area covered by the patented invention. This does not necessarily have to be in the area where the patent applicant is economically active.
If a patent application relates to more technology areas, this application is allocated to these technology areas for a proportional proportion. For example, if an application relates to two technology areas, the table counts each area 0.5 times, so that the total of patent applications remains the same.

The data for 2013 to 2017 are final. The 2018 data are further preliminary. The 2019 data are provisional.

Correction of figures for 2013 to 2019.
Previously, a patent applicant was counted via the psn_id (the ID for standardised names within PATSTAT), with each psn_id representing a unique applicant. Further analysis of the microdata shows that some companies are nevertheless represented by several psn_id’s in the link, thus double counting certain companies as patent applicants. With this adjustment, the companies themselves are counted as applicants instead of the psn_id’s, thus eliminating double counting. This correction covers all statistical years and concerns several dozen fewer patent applicants per year than before. If a link with the General Business Register is possible, the company is counted as a patent applicant. If no link is possible, the psn_id will still be counted as an applicant. In addition, the figures are now rounded to multiples of five.

New figures for 2020 will be published in mid 2023.
