Description
This map shows what nitrate concentrations are in water that leaches from agricultural parcels in the Netherlands. Nitrate is a nutrient consisting of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen is applied to the soil in agriculture with animal manure and fertiliser to allow plants to grow better. Part of the nitrogen rinses out as nitrate and thus ends up in ground and surface water. Nitrate is an important indicator of the quality of ground and surface water, especially as a source for drinking water. The nitrate map helps to clarify the areas in which nitrate leaching may cause water quality to become a problem. RIVM has created this map with a statistical model based on data from the National Measurement Network Effects Manure Policy (LMM). This map helps to conduct the discussion where additional measures are needed in the Netherlands to further reduce leaching of nitrate from agricultural lands. No statements can be made on the basis of the nitrate map about the water quality at the level of detail. In reality, the values in this card can be higher or lower than 15 mg/L.
