A hydrogeological schema profile of the Hamburg Underground is the basis of the Geological Overview Map of Hamburg 1: 50 000 — Quaternary top layers, sheet 1 Hydrogeological profile types. The schema profile defines 14 characteristic profile types. These are represented in their extensive distribution.
A distinction is made between groundwater conductive (sand, gravel) and non-groundwater-conducting layers (sliding clay, sliding gel, basin clay, etc.). Due to the hydrogeologous contrasts of the Quaternary in Hamburg, the profile types are divided into three main groups:
1. Profile types of predominantly saale cold-time deposits of the geest;
2. Profile types of the predominantly now to soft-cold deposits of the Elbe valley;
3. Profile types within the elstereizeit gutters.
