EasyGSH-DB_WAVS: Frequency distributions of the significant wave height, mean wave start direction and associated mean peak period (1996-2015)

Description

The tabular files (csv format) in the annual zip archives contain three blocks: Basic information, relative frequency of the significant wave height Hm0 and the mean wave start-up direction, as well as the associated mean peak period Tp. A file refers to a simulation period of one year (1.1. — 31.12.) and one location (location: ETRS89 UTM 32N). The products were derived from simulation results of a spectral seagoing model of the 3. Generation (SWAN) is derived. In addition, each archive contains a file indicating the hollow height (height reference: Meters above normal height zero NHN) of all product points, which allows the water depth to be discharged at the respective position. The basic information contains additional information such as the location and designation of the output location, simulation year, further statistical parameters (maximum or mean of the significant wave height Hm0,max or Hm0,mean) as well as further information on the reported frequencies of the evaluated data points (e.g. number of hourly simulation time steps, class classifications of the significant wave height as well as the mean wave start direction). The relative frequencies of the significant wave height are divided into classes with a selected class width of 25 cm and the associated wave start direction in increments of 22.5°. The frequencies were determined on the basis of hourly values for each whole year. The absolute frequency within a class can be calculated by multiplying the relative frequency by the number of processed data points (“valid no. of time steps”). An exemplary representation of the frequencies of the significant wave height and mean wave start direction at two selected locations can be found in the preview image. In addition, the mean peak periods associated with the frequencies of the significant wave height and mean wave start direction are added in seconds. A spectral seagoing model based on SWAN and assuming a spatially and temporally constant mean water level (NHN+ 0 m) and without considering currents was created. The time simulation and output interval is one hour. The model expansion and discretisation (unstructured computational grid) correspond to the model parameters of the coupled hydrodynamic telemac tomawac model used in EasyGSH to validate product results as part of a multi-model approach. The generated data are part of the seagoing analyses in EasyGSH-DB with the aim of creating application-oriented synoptic reference data on geomorphology, sedimentology and hydrodynamics in the German Bay for a referenceable, continuously processed basic data set of 20 years for Deutsche Bucht.
