The map shows the variety of types of waterways and that not all rivers or lakes are navigable for each type of ship.
The Netherlands, as a trading nation, is dependent on the transport of goods. An important part of this takes place through rivers, canals and lakes. These connect the North Sea with the rest of the Netherlands and the underlying Europe. Inland waterways enable transport in a large-scale and relatively cheap way. Navigation routes are indicated on inland waterways. The Netherlands has 6 200 km of waterways. Rijkswaterstaat monitors and guides traffic on inland waterways.
Transport on inland waterways depends on the proper functioning of the system, including lack or excess of water. In times of drought, transport is adjusted as much as possible by switching to smaller ships. There may also be longer waiting times for some dams.
