Water rescue points Hamburg

Description

A project of the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft Landesverband Hamburg e.V. in cooperation with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the Hamburg Fire Department to increase water safety on the Elbe and other waters of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. As an extension of a preliminary project ‘Elbrettungspunkte’, individually marked signs are clearly visible to citizens at selected locations. In workshops together with the HPA and fire brigade, additional areas on the Norder, Süder and Dove Elbe were included in the project. Due to the special nature of the international port, it was decided, together with the HPA, not only to identify bathing spots, but also to identify, from a nautical point of view, distinctive points such as public ferry docks and public berths. The reason for this is that international ship crews do not Knowing street names, but relying on additional hints when making an emergency call. Another special feature in international shipping is that an emergency call is usually made via VHF maritime radio and not via telephone / mobile phone. This emergency call then arrives at the nautical headquarters of the HPA, which then alerts the fire brigade via telephone. All other relevant water areas in Hamburg can be checked promptly by the project participants at the request of the responsible authorities and a proposal for labelling can be developed.
