Description

This map shows the extent of exceedance of the critical deposition value (KDW) for eutrophication of the European protected habitats in Flanders in the shades of yellow-orange-red. The green areas are the habitats in which the KDW are (currently) not in exceedance. The grey areas are the habitats that are not sensitive to the effect of airborne eutrophication (> 34 kg N/ha.year). The KDW is the amount of nitrogen deposition (kilograms of nitrogen per hectare per year) for a given ecosystem under which, according to current scientific knowledge, there is no significant change in biodiversity in the long term. A specific KDW has been determined for each habitat type. After all, not every nature type is equally sensitive to eutrophication. The exceedance map has been drawn up by VITO on the basis of the following data: (A) The modelled depositions of eutrophicants based on VLOPS20, the 2020 version of the VLOPS model using emission and meteorological data of the year 2017. This is a raster layer with a resolution of 1 km2; (B) The BWK habitat map version 2020; and (C) The appropriate extension sites for European protected habitats and species: the so-called provisional search areas for conservation objectives - version 0.2 (ANB, 2015).
