Description
Starting from Western Poland, the wolf has been spreading again in Germany for about 20 years – without human intervention. For almost 100 years, the wolf had disappeared from Germany, apart from individual migrating wolves. After centuries of persecution, he was considered exterminated in this country. The confirmation of a wolf pack on a military training site in Saxon Upper Lusatia in 2000 was a wild biological sensation. Immigrated from Poland, a wolf pair had settled in the east of Germany and raised young. From Upper Lusatia the wolf deposit spread in the following years not only in the east of the republic, but also in the northwest direction initially to Lower Saxony. For the 2021/2022 monitoring year, 161 packs, 43 pairs and 21 sedentary individual animals were detected in Germany. The distribution focuses on the federal states of Brandenburg (47 packs), followed by Lower Saxony (34 packs) and Saxony (31 packs).
