Accumulation of pressures that may cause the entry of nutrients (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) into the South Atlantic Demarcation (EM SUD PRE Nutrients)

Description

In order to identify the areas with the highest nutrient input (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) in the South Atlantic Demarcation, a spatial analysis of the sources described in section 2.6. of the "Pressure and Impact Analysis" of the Demarcation has been carried out. Using 5 by 5 minute meshing, the following cells have been selected: - Those that are less than 500 m from an authorized place for the discharge of dredging material - Those that coincide with EMEP cells with higher nutrient loads (those that add up to 20% of the total pollution, starting the sum from highest to lowest) - Presence of aquaculture facilities - Those that are less than 2 km from the mouth of a river - Those that are less than 5 km from the river whose loads are reported to the OSPAR convention (those that add up to 85% of the total pollutant load for the OSPAR zone have been selected, starting from the sum of highest to lowest, for each of the elements) - Those that are less than 5 km from a PRTR complex, both treatment plants and industrial facilities, which has an obligation to report by total nitrogen and/or total phosphorus - Those less than 2 km from sewage treatment plants that do not have the obligation to report nutrient loads discharged according to the PRTR regulation - Those that overlap with some coastal water body that does not achieve good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD - Those that are less than 2 km from a river that does not reach good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD - Those less than 2 km from any transitional water body that does not achieve good status by phytoplankton in compliance with the WFD Once all the elements have been integrated, the index has been calculated using the following formula: NUTRIENT INDEX = 0.25*[Dregged material dumps + atmospheric depositions with high nutrient concentrations + WWTPs not reporting to PRTR] + 0.5* [River discharges + OSPAR rivers with high nutrient loads] + 0.75*[Rivers or transition waters not reaching good status in phytoplankton + PRTR complexes reporting nutrients] + 1*[transition waters not reaching good status in phytoplankton] The result is a mesh of probabilities of entry of high nutrient loads. Cells are classified according to the following criteria: Very High: Major 2 / High: 1 to 2 / Medium: 0.5 to 1 / Low: 0.25 to 0.5 / Very Low: minor 0.25
