Deceased; cause of death, quarter and year of death
Description
This table contains figures on the underlying causes of death of deceased residents of the Netherlands. The figures are broken down by quarter and year of death by a limited number of causes of death.
The mortality from COVID-19 or the disease caused by the novel coronavirus is coded with the ICD-10 codes U07.1 or U07.2. These codes have been put down by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 'emergency codes' or temporary emergency codes and will later be included in a chapter of the ICD10. These codes are therefore still counted in the quarterly table under the category 'Other causes of death'.
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) switched to the use of international software for automatic coding of the causes of death in the 2013 statistical year. This makes the figures more reproducible and internationally comparable. However, there have been some significant shifts in the causes of death (see paragraph 4).

Status of figures:
The figures for 2023 are provisional, the remaining figures are final.
Changes as of 24 April 2024:
Preliminary figures for Q4 2023 and full year 2023 have been added. Figures for Q1, Q2 and Q3 2023 have been adjusted.
When will there be new figures?
Preliminary figures for the first quarter of 2024 will be published in the third quarter of 2024.
