Description
A land weather is a late medieval (often 14th or 15th century) earthen wall that was built to secure the territory outside a settlement. Land defences are about two metres high – and including dry canals on either side of the shore – four to ten metres wide. The earthen ramparts were densely planted with thorn bushes and undergrowth or sometimes with palisades. In this way, they created significant obstacles for unwanted visitors. Most of the remains of land defences are located in Limburg and on the sandy soils of Gelderland and Overijssel. A large part of the approximately 100 land defences mapped in the Netherlands has completely disappeared.
