Pasture of dairy cattle; meadow area 1997-2015
Description
This table shows the percentages of dairy cows offered or not offered during the pasture season. From the category ‘well grazing’ it is also indicated how the grazing is divided between the forms on which it is offered: ‘moving day and night’ and ‘pasture only during the day’. In the Agricultural census (see below 4.) the number of weeks that these forms of grazing have been offered was asked. The number of weeks is multiplied by the corresponding numbers of dairy cows. The numbers of pasture weeks that follow are then converted into percentages.
In one season, individual cows can only be offered day and night for a number of weeks of grazing day and night as well as several weeks of grazing. These are taken into account separately in the calculation of the number of pasture weeks.
As of 2009, figures on the number of hours of grazing are no longer available for each individual year. This is because from 2009 these data come from the Agricultural census and this question is not asked every year in the Agricultural Count.
Young cattle will usually stay outside day and night in the pasture season if grazing is offered. Therefore, of the young cattle is not the distribution by type of pasture, but the total number of pasture days. The figures for the number of days of pasture of young cattle are not comparable to those of previous years for 2008 and subsequent years. Until 2007, the average number of days of pasture was calculated on only the animals with pasture. From 2008 onwards, the average is calculated over all young cattle (with and without grazing). As a result, the figure is much lower. By including the topic of pasture in the Agricultural Count, the question about young cattle has not been included as a permanent part of the research.
The information in this table, together with figures on the size of the cattle herd, gives a picture of the evolution of the number of ‘milk cows in whey’.
