Original moorland distribution in Lower Saxony 1 : 50 000
Description
The map of the original bog distribution of Lower Saxony shows the maximum extent of the bogs in the lowlands of Lower Saxony. The map shows the distribution of bogs, micro-high bogs and raised bogs on the basis of historical maps. The designation of the bogs in the map of the original moorland distribution was carried out to a considerable extent according to vegetation, i.e. geobotanically or partly according to field names and does not correspond to the geological definition of bogs. For the map of the original moorland distribution, the vegetation was evaluated, which is shown on historical maps since the 18th century, regardless of the peat thickness. In contrast, other geological maps show peatlands with a peat thickness of at least 0.3 m. Due to the different definitions of the peatland concept alone, the peatland area in the map of the original peatland distribution is therefore larger than in the other geological maps of the LBEG.
