Nitrogen, phosphorus in the Netherlands, 1986-2013
Description
The table consists of three parts. The last update was on 23 October 2014.
The part ‘total balance of minerals’ was updated every five years. The supply and disposal flows are dominated by the international trade of products containing nitrogen and phosphorus (such as food, animal feed, fertiliser and ammonia). For nitrogen alone, bonding and emissions still play an important role in all kinds of industrial processes.
The section ‘Mineral balance soil and groundwater’ was updated annually. The main supply flow here is the administration of animal manure and fertiliser on agricultural land. The main drain flow is crop harvesting. This balance distinguishes between agricultural land and other land.
The section “Mineral balance fresh surface water” was updated annually. In addition to the flow of nitrogen and phosphorus through the large rivers, from abroad to the sea, this is mainly about the drainage and drainage from agricultural lands and other lands and discharges by industry, households and agriculture.
The three sections together provide information on the amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus entering the environment. This can lead to acidification and fertilisation (eutrophication).
