Description

Building data for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area have been published based on data from the Regional Basic Register maintained by HSY for the municipalities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen. For Espoo, the area geometry has been extracted from the open interface of the City of Espoo. The data have been limited so that more limited information is published on single- and two-dwelling houses, holiday homes, household-dwelling buildings and sauna buildings than on other buildings (e.g. data on blocks of flats are not published). Civil defence shelters have been completely omitted from the publication. Ownership information is not published openly for data protection reasons. The data is updated every two weeks. A building is a separate building, built on a fixed or permanent basis at its location, with its own entrance, which contains covered space intended for housing or other purposes, limited by the outdoor area of the walls or other buildings. Buildings do not include lightweight canopies. Only completed buildings that have undergone a migration review have been selected for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area's open building dataset. The data have been extracted on a building-by-building basis. Information on buildings includes, for example, location, year of construction, purpose of use and surface areas, as well as building material. The data includes the national permanent building code (VTJ-PRT). It should be noted that in buildings completed before the 1980s, where no subsequent extension or alteration work requiring a building permit has been carried out, much of the information is based on owner and constructor surveys. As a result, there may be errors and inaccuracies in the data. In the case of Helsinki, this applies to the period before 1981 and in the case of Espoo, to the period before 1984. However, some data (e.g. total area) on office, commercial and residential blocks of flats in Helsinki have been revised in 1987–89 to a level that is at least reliable for statistical purposes.
