Car dependency and precariousness in Brussels
Description
In this report, we address the cross-cutting issues of precariousness and car dependence in the Brussels Region by analysing the car ownership of households through the prism of their level of deprivation. To this end, we are mobilising the ‘Income and Living Conditions Survey’ (SILC). We thus construct a typology of households defined according to the trade-offs they have made between the costs and benefits of owning a car. We are particularly interested in the socio-economic characteristics of motorized households that are in a situation of deprivation. On this basis, we can assess the economic stress that the car induces on the household budget and make hypotheses about family and professional configurations that involve a strong car dependency, even in an urbanized context such as that of the Brussels Region.
