Description
Pollution of water by nitrates is caused in certain circumstances by intensive agricultural production, the most important diffuse source being the excessive or inadequate application of nitrogen fertilisers in agriculture. This type of contamination has been monitored for years with the publication of Directive 91/676/EEC (Nitrates Directive) and its transposition into Spanish territory of Royal Decree 261/1996. At present, the latter regulatory instrument is repealed after the adoption of Royal Decree 47/2022, which establishes the necessary measures to reduce pollution of inland surface waters and groundwater caused by nitrates from agricultural sources.
The current RD 47/2022, which establishes new water limits of 37.5 mg/l of NO3 in groundwater, has been used to evaluate the recorded data.
The service provides the data recorded from the nitrate stations reported for the successive Quatrienniums of the Nitrates Directive.
