Pension gap for total pension according to pension scheme

The graph below illustrates the pension gap of the total pension for people who have recently taken their retirement pension according to the pension scheme. The four major groups are displayed by default. Other pension schemes (which do not appear by default) can be displayed by selecting them in the ‘select pension scheme’ filter. To better understand the reality behind the pension gap, we also look at pension gaps based on the median total pension. This median total pension corresponds to the total amount of the pension of the most average pensioner; 50% are above this pension amount and 50% are below it. For people who have recently taken their pension and who only have an employee’s pension, the median total pension is EUR 1 982 for men and EUR 1 623 for women. This is equivalent to a percentage difference of 18% between men and women, which is lower than the pension gap of 28% based on average amounts. In the graph below, the average total pension is broken down to show the average statutory pension and the average supplementary pension. We do this for all pension schemes and, of course, for men and women separately. It is immediately apparent that in all pension schemes the supplementary pension represents only a small part of the total pension. Among the various schemes, the scheme for the self-employed is characterised by the largest pension gaps. Nevertheless, a decrease in this gap can be observed, from 60% in 2019 to 52% in 2022. However, it remains well above the pension gap observed for the population as a whole, amounting to 21% in 2022.
