Invited refugees; nationality, gender and age
Description
This table contains information on the annual number of refugees invited by the Netherlands.
Eligible persons are people who have often been living in refugee camps for years and cannot return to their country of origin. Invited refugees are selected by the IND on the recommendation of the United Nations Refugee Organization (UNHCR). The refugees come to the Netherlands as part of the UNHCR resettlement programme and are therefore also referred to as resettlers. Invited refugees are entitled to a residence permit and do not have to go through the Dutch asylum procedure. That is why they are not included in the figures on asylum applications.
Since the EU-Turkey statement of 18 March 2016, the number of refugees invited has increased. This statement states that for every Syrian who is returned from Greece to Turkey, another Syrian from Turkey will be admitted into the EU. If more than twenty-five refugees of a nationality are invited in a year, this nationality will be listed separately in the table.
