This publication provides an overview of all population surveys in Switzerland carried out before the first federal census of 1850. It not only covers the results of the Helvetic census of 1798/99 at the level of the municipalities, but also includes substantial extensions by also covering all spatially complete surveys in the Ancien Régime and in the first half of the 19th century. The research has been carried out by Martin Schuler, author of this work, in all cantonal and episcopal archives of Switzerland as well as some neighbouring areas, taking into account the extensive existing literature. In addition to a historical introduction to the territorial development of the country, the publication contains a definition of the different types of population surveys as well as a description of their qualities and the respective political context. In Switzerland, the Helvetic census of 1798/99 and the census of the daily statutes 1837/38 are described and documented. There is a wide range of cantonal censuses, ranging from annual surveys in Neuchâtel to the complete absence of non-church censuses in other cantons. At the heart of this publication are municipal tables, maps of the political divisions in three periods (before 1798, during the Helvetic Republic, after 1803/15) and a detailed description of the situation in each canton. In addition to the calculation of the population numbers of municipalities, all territorial changes at the level of the cantons, districts and municipalities have been recorded since 1803/15.
