Potential nitrate concentration in leachate (2019)
Description
The potential nitrate concentration in leachate in [mg NO3/l] is an important parameter for estimating and evaluating the leachate quality at the lower boundary of the root space.
As part of the country-wide basic emission monitoring, the potential nitrate concentration is estimated on the basis of the nitrogen area balance from agriculture at municipal level, atmospheric N deposition, land use according to ATKIS-DLM, additional N mobilisation or immobilisation in the soil, nitrate degradation in the soil (denitrification) and the amount of leachate.
The calculated potential nitrate concentration in leachate is used in addition to the measured nitrate concentrations in the groundwater measuring points for risk assessment and assessment of the chemical status of groundwater bodies in accordance with the EC WFD.
With regard to the potential nitrate concentration in leachate determined nationwide, it should be noted that the values are not suitable for an accurate assessment due to the spatial resolution of the available input data.
