Environmental Ordinance - Cold-heat storage (KWO) free zone
Description
The cold-heat-storage-free zone is the groundwater protection zone where the groundwater can reach a pumping well for the public drinking water supply within 25 years and where no adequate protective clay layer is present. Within this zone, cold-heat storage systems are not allowed. The application of these systems entails risks for drinking water extraction. Warming of the groundwater can lead to changes in, for example, the chemical quality, there can be a negative influence on the flow direction of groundwater for drinking water preparation and there can be calamities when using liquids in closed systems. Drilling in the soil can also pose a threat. These systems are therefore not allowed. This file was adopted by the Provincial Council on 15 November 2023 and will enter into force on 1 January 2024 under the Environment Act.
