Level 1 Hydroecoregions (HER-1)

Description

A spatial entity that is homogeneous in terms of the physical determinants that control the organisation and overall functioning of aquatic ecosystems. At the basin level, the universally recognized primary determinants of the ecological functioning of rivers are geology, terrain and climate. This concept is inspired by theories of hierarchical control of hydrosystems, and is particularly based on the interlocking of physical scales, from the basin to the microhabitat. IRSTEA (formerly CEMAGREF) has defined the hydroecoregion for metropolitan France. He developed the conceptual framework of regionalization by "hydroecoregion" and the general aspects of the method, the objective being to define and characterize the Hydroecoregions for metropolitan France. There are two levels for hydroecoregions (HER): Level 1 and Level 2. In total, 22 Level 1 Hydro-Ecoregions (HER-1) were identified on criteria combining geology, terrain and climate, universally considered as the primary determinants of the functioning of running water ecosystems at the scale of 1/1,000,000th.
