Geotechnical classification of sediments in accordance with DIN 18311 (2010) — Wet dredging

Description
The map sediment classes for wet dredging works sets in scale 1: 250,000 information on the spread of sediments of the same nature at the surface of the seabed up to a depth of 0.2 m and for the depths 0-1 m and 0-2 m in accordance with DIN 18311 (2010) — dredging in 7 classes (see legend). The map is based on sediment samples from the seabed surface to a depth of 0.2 m as well as layer descriptions of drilling in 0.2 m teufe as well as in the above-mentioned teufen areas, which were available in the German North Sea region until January 2013.
These basic data are stored in databases at the BSH and LBEG, and data collected in the future will be integrated into it.
Wet dredging is required, e.g. when sedimentary sediment relocation has to be removed in waterways, where material for coastal protection or construction needs to be removed from the sea, and in the case of pipeline or cable laying in the seabed.
A basis for the commissioning and implementation of the corresponding work is the “DIN 18311 — General Technical Regulations for Construction Services — Wet dredging”.
This classifies the soil species to be found in 10 classes according to their nature, which are the basis for the evaluation of sediment data on the seabed of the North Sea.
