Mapping Habitat 1170 INTEMARES_A4 Mud volcanoes of the Gulf of Cadiz

Description

The information contained in this dataset corresponds to the spatial distribution of the benthic habitats identified in the Habitats Directive and represented in the Natura 2000 Network and some that are not yet catalogued under the Directive (Habitat 1170, 1110 and others). In Campo Somero of the SCI for ‘Volcanes de mud del Golfo de Cádiz’, due to a higher sampling rate in recent years, it has been possible to obtain the extensive distribution of these habitats through modelling techniques (Random Forest) and mapping based on expert interpretation using presence/absence data and abundance data of habitat-building species collected in the numerous oceanographic campaigns that have been carried out in the study area. Bathymetric data acquired in the different campaigns have also been used, by the multibeam echosonde, the reflectivity at a resolution of 15x15 m, sedimentological data and underwater image data with the ROV LIROPUS and the HORUS photogrammetric sleigh, in order to identify and quantify the species present as well as obtain data on the types of bottom and habitats. In the Deep Field of the SCI modelling techniques could not be performed due to the absence of spatial data on large areas of the different variables necessary for this technique. Therefore, the mapping in the Deep Field was obtained by expert interpretation, based on the exhaustive analysis of the geomorphology data of the background of the different campaigns, sedimentological and sampling in very focused areas (in the different mud and diapiro-volcano volcanoes located in the Deep Field) as well as the use of some transects of underwater images. Therefore, having no prior knowledge of habitat types, presence/absence of species and other variables, it was agreed to name these large areas without data as sands and/or sludge with unknown biological component. The results will serve to improve and complete the characterization of the benthic communities of the sedimentary and / or rocky bottoms mainly in the Somero Field but also in the Deep Field of the LIC. It is a data set composed of polygonal elements, where each element represents a benthic habitat. The area covered by the data provided covers the seabed of the SCI ‘Sludge volcanoes of the Gulf of Cadiz’, both the Somero Fluid Expulsion Field (the area closest to the coast) and the Deep Fluid Expulsion Field. Each object has associated a series of alphanumeric variables such as the study area, the type of habitat that was assigned according to the studies, the area of each polygon as well as different fields with the different codes and nomenclatures of the different habitats in the different lists and / or national and international catalogs and benthic habitats The preparation of this set of geographical information began within the framework of the LIFE IP INTEMARES project between 2019 and 2022 and taking as preliminary data, for a better mapping, the progress made during the LIFE + INDEMARES stage (2010-2012). The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
