Hydrogeological overview map of Lower Saxony 1 : 500 000 - Groundwater bodies

Description

The map shows the groundwater bodies in Lower Saxony on a scale of 1:500 000. According to the EC WFD, a body of groundwater is a defined volume of groundwater within one or more aquifers. The groundwater bodies were demarcated in the LBEG according to hydraulic boundaries and hydrogeological criteria. The above-ground watersheds were used as the above-current boundary and the relevant floodwaters as the under-current boundary. It was assumed that the watersheds of the above-ground waters also reflect the underground watersheds on a large scale. Locally, however, there may be deviations due to the hydrogeological conditions. A demarcation of water bodies in the vertical direction was not carried out, as a subdivision was considered not useful due to the partly complex geological structure and not necessary for the purpose. In the second step, these hydraulically demarcated groundwater bodies were further subdivided into the predominant hydrogeological units loose rock, mesozoic solid rock and paleozoic solid rock. Minor deviations between the above-ground and underground catchment areas can occur in the area of the watersheds. The description of the hydrogeological conditions can be found in the description of the hydrogeological subspaces (see explanatory notes on spaces and subspaces) from which the groundwater bodies are constructed. In order to ensure the consistency of the GIS datasets used in Lower Saxony, the GIS geometries of groundwater bodies on working scale 1 shall be: 25 000 have been updated by the NLWKN. There was no fundamental redefinition on the basis of technical criteria, but the existing borderlines were examined and, if necessary, adjusted. The dataset contains all or part of all groundwater bodies located in Lower Saxony (working status February 2013). The dataset is not bounded. Delimitations of groundwater bodies outside Lower Saxony were taken 1:1 from the data sets of neighbouring countries. Individual consultations with institutions outside the NLWKN are still required (e.g. harmonisation of designations or demarcations in the area of national borders).
