Producer confidence; mood indicator of industry, industry
Description
Producer confidence is a mood indicator of industrial entrepreneurs that indicates the direction in which industrial production is expected to develop. The indicator is an unweighted arithmetic average of three (sub)indicators from the business cycle survey in industry. These underlying sub-indicators are first stripped of seasonal influences for the calculation of producer confidence. This concerns the questions expected activity, the opinion on the order position and the opinion on the inventories. The results of the latter question are inverted prior to the calculation of the Producer Confidence, because a (too) large stock is seen as negative.
The more optimistic or pessimistic entrepreneurs are, the more the value of industrial confidence will deviate positively or negatively from the zero line and the greater is the expectation that production in a given industry sector within industry and industry as a whole will increase or decrease in the coming months. Producer confidence has been available for industry as a whole since 1985. For the subsectors within the industry, the results series starts in 1994.
