Accumulation of pressures that can cause the entry of pathogens into the Canary Islands (EM CAN PRE Pathogens)
Description
In the joint analysis of the pressures that can facilitate the entry of pathogens into the sea, wastewater discharges, aquaculture facilities and bathing areas have been considered. Ballast water has not been included in this analysis.
To identify areas of potential pathogen entry, an index has been developed based on the following criteria, applied on the meshing of 5 x 5 minutes:
- Presence of discharge of urban waste water less than 500 metres away.
- Presence of an aquaculture facility less than 500 metres away.
- Presence of a bathing area less than 500 meters.
The following formula has then been applied:
ENTRY OF PATHOGENS= 0.25*[areas open to bathing in 2008 to 2010] + 0.5*[bathing areas closed due to faecal contamination in 2008 to 2010 + waste water discharges less than 100,000 Heq + aquaculture concessions with production greater than 1,000 Tm] + 1*[sewage discharges greater than 100,000 Heq + aquaculture concessions with production greater than 1,000 Tm]
Areas of high pathogen entry potential have been selected from cells classified by the “Very High” range and areas of moderate pathogen entry potential from cells classified by the “High” range:
Very High: 1.51 to 2 / High: 1,01 to 1,5 / Medium: 0.51 to 1 / Low: 0.01 to 0.5 / Very Low: 0
