Glacial relocation of tertiary sediments in the Bergisches Land on the edge of the Düsseldorf Glacier
Description
East of Düsseldorf, in the northwestern Rhenish Slate Mountains (Bergisches Land), the development of tertiary deposits, which discordantly superimposed the Devonian underground, is investigated using new highways. The focus of stratigraphic analysis is on the so-called high-altitude terraces. It turned out that from the five high-altitude terraces to Breddin (1928) and Kaiser (1957) there is probably only one Pliocene-era terrace. Due to glacial elevations, fracture tectonics and solifluctive rearrangements, the Pliocene River Shotters together with marine fine sands of the Oligocene-era Grafenberg formation reached different topographical levels. In addition, the glacitectonic relocation of tertiary sediments through the Düsseldorf glacier is demonstrated by the detection of deformed meltwater deposits (type B-glacitectonite).
