Characterization of the Andalusian coastline, 2013

Description

The coastline represents the linear segment that runs along the margin of the Andalusian coast in contact with the sea, from its beginning in Portugal to its eastern end in Murcia. This version has been edited based on the photointerpretation of the flight of the year 2013 available in the framework of the National Plan of Aerial Orthographies (PNOA). The coastline layout is offered in three main versions: In the first place the line called "physiographic" has been drawn. To obtain it, four digitization criteria have been used that define the coastline from a geomorphological perspective: 1) last wet tide mark in sedimentary littoral formations exposed to open sea (beaches), 2) lowest tide limit (among all available orthos) for estuaries and tidal network, 3) external infrastructure limit for all types of infrastructure in direct contact with the sea and 4) cliff base for rock formations directly connected to the sea. Secondly, the coastline has been characterized and traced following (in the stretches of beach) the contact between the dry beach and the coastal dune when it exists or at the upper limit of the dry beach observable when the dune is not present. This version is useful for calculating coast line forward/backward rates (coastal erosion rates) and has been referred to as the "erosion coast line". Third, the line called "coastal front" has been drawn and characterized, avoiding marshes, estuaries and limits of ports and breakwaters, so that a length more in line with the traditional concept of coast, which is especially useful from the statistical point of view, is obtained. In addition to these three basic layers to be taken as a reference, a series of derived layers have been extracted that differentiate, on the one hand, the hierarchy established in the classification of the physiographic units (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, plus a fourth level of specialization included in the layer "Level 3") and on the other hand the different topics of interest from the physiographic point of view and the impact on the layout of the coastline (canyons, dunes, margins of estuaries and tidal pipes, urban and infrastructures and beaches). Finally, traces associated with different toponymic sources of each coastal section are also included.
