Meyeratlas sample sheet 1796
Description
The "Carte d'une partie très interesting de la Suisse", also known as the trial or extra sheet, occupies an important place in the creation of Atlas Suisse. On the basis of the relief created in advance, Johann Rudolf Meyer received permission from the Bernese government to publish and continue the work on Bernese territory, which at that time also extended over the Aargau and the Vaud. With the publication, Meyer complied with this approval. The sheet was also considered a model sheet with which advertising for the Atlas could be made, although it did not yet correspond to the final sheet cut and the orientation of the north-oriented "Atlas Suisse", which appeared from 1796. It also served as an independent tourist card for the emerging tourism in the Bernese Oberland. However, the publication of the extra sheet and the first atlas sheets also led to the discord between Meyer/Weiss and Johann Geoerg Tralles. The "Atlas Suisse" represents a highlight in Swiss cartography, which remained unsurpassed until the publication of the Dufour map.
