Heavy rain simulation Wuppertal - Rain from 29.05.2018 (Version 2.1 ❘ 10/2022)
Description
The dataset includes the results of the simulation of the extreme heavy rain event of 29 May 2018 in Wuppertal, carried out in October 2022 by Dr. Pecher AG (Erkrath) on behalf of the city of Wuppertal, commissioned by the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke WSW Energie und Wasser AG. The dataset is part of version 2.1 of the heavy rain simulations, which Dr. Pecher AG has been calculating at irregular intervals for the city of Wuppertal since 2018. The simulation approaches are refined with each new version. In addition, the errors detected at the respective calculation time, in particular in the terrain model used, are corrected. The simulation takes into account the rainwater runoff in the sewer network and water leaking from the sewer network through overflow with a simplified model approach, as well as the different runoff velocities on surfaces with different roughness. Starting with version 2.1, a moderate infiltration approach is considered in the simulation. In addition, the Wupper is modeled with an infinite capacity for the inflowing rainwater. In the simulations, there can no longer be a backwater in which the rainwater floods surfaces in the valley floor, because it can no longer be deducted from the Wupper. Important note: In the current state of the art, the simulation results are not exact predictions of the course of future events. They contain unrecognized model errors and neglect some interactions for which no adequate data are available, e.g. water retention due to the flooding of basement floors. The results therefore have a tendency towards local oversubscription of the water depths that would occur in the event of a real rain of the assumed strength. However, the simulation results are well suited for identifying and locating the hazards of heavy rain, e.g. with the help of the interactive heavy rain hazard map published by the city of Wuppertal and the Wuppertal municipal utilities. The rainfall measured during the extreme heavy rain event of 29 May 2018 was used as precipitation in the simulation, which was unevenly distributed over the urban area, i.e. a so-called natural rain. In the center of the storm, the rain event had a strength up to heavy rain index 11 (SRI 11). The results are three TIFF files with a resolution of 1 m (square pixels whose edge length corresponds to 1 m in the real world) and georeferencing via TIFF World Files under an Open Data license (CC BY 4.0). The pixel values in the three files indicate the maximum water depth, the maximum flow velocity and the direction of the maximum flow velocity, which are calculated for the respective grid cell in the course of the simulation.
