INTEMARES - Cañón de Cap Bretón - Capa de Habitáts 1023 IEO

Description

The information contained in this data set is the mapping of the habitats identified through the study carried out within the scope of the LIFE-IP-INTEMARES project “Integrated, innovative and participatory management of the Natura 2000 Network in the Spanish marine environment”, specifically within action A.2.2 “Acts to improve knowledge for the declaration of new marine spaces due to their importance for habitats”, by the team working in the COST-SANTANDER (IEO-CSIC), in collaboration with the INTEMARES team of the IEO Marine SIG group. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of benthic habitats of the Capbreton Underwater Cannon System. The area comprising the data provided covers a cartographic area of about 1812.39 km2 whose longitudinal limits are approximately 1o50' WEST - 2o80 WEST, while the latitudinal ones are approximately 43o21' N, and 43o 45', its seabed, the waters of the canyon system comprising the Capbreton Canyon, its tributaries, the intertributary platforms, the continental shelf and the upper slope. This set of information is structured based on mathematical modeling that linked the presences or densities of the biota to the available environmental variables to obtain the prediction of habitat presence. It is a set of data composed of polygonal elements, where each element represents a different habitat with a name and its correspondence according to the national and international regulations considered. Therefore, each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables, which associate the entities to the different nomenclatures that correspond to them according to the regulations. The preparation of this set of geographical information began in 2019, thanks to different oceanographic campaigns listed in the corresponding report: "Report on the characterization, mapping and conservation status of habitats of the Capbreton Submarine Canyon System (North Atlantic Demarcation)".These can be divided into image sampling (non-invasive) and direct sampling with dredgers, drags, beam bou etc. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
