Large mountain landslides
Description
This product is a result of NVE taking over the central government responsibility for landslides in 2009.
The service is intended as an aid that makes it easier to obtain an overview of unstable rock slopes and
associated consequences.
Hazard and risk mapping is carried out by NGU on behalf of NVE. How follow-up of the unstable mountain slopes and hazard zones should be followed up by monitoring and in land use planning is described in NVE Report 77/2016: Hazard and risk classification of unstable rock slopes.
Two databases have been established for the dissemination of mapping and hazard areas. NVE’s database conveys hazard zones for outlet areas and tidal waves, as well as potential up-damp areas and downstream floods as a result of dam breaches where applicable. Ngu’s database focuses on the geological data, including motion measurements.
NVE’s mapping is primarily aimed at existing buildings. When identifying and prioritising areas that need continuous monitoring, emphasis has been placed on where people live and reside in potentially avalanche-prone areas and areas affected by flood waves or dams as a direct consequence of a rockslide.
The database is a product of the mapping and hazard and risk classification that has been made. Together, this shall provide a basis for assessing measures in the form of monitoring with a view to being able to alert an upcoming rock avalanche and thereby avoiding potential loss of life. The mapping provides important information about the degree of danger as a basis for land use planning.
