Concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
Description
An increased concentration of greenhouse gases causes an increase in the average temperature on earth with shifting of the climate belts and changes in extreme weather phenomena as a result. And because most greenhouse gases remain in the atmosphere for a very long time, the temperature on earth will even continue to rise for a long time after stabilizing the concentration of greenhouse gases. But the lower the level at which the concentrations are stabilized, the lower the total temperature rise will eventually be.
The increasing atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases in the 20th and early 21st centuries assigns the IPCC with more than 95% certainty mainly to human activities such as fossil fuel use, agriculture and land use changes (e.g. deforestation). And even though most greenhouse gases are emitted in the northern hemisphere, the concentration of greenhouse gases is almost the same everywhere in the world. This is because their residence time in the atmosphere is sufficiently long to produce a homogeneous mixture.
This indicator tracks the evolution of greenhouse gas concentrations in the global atmosphere.
