Status of habitat mapping in EEA member and cooperating countries, March 2024
Description
This is the metadata results from an extensive survey across the EEA-Eionet member countries, to compile information on the habitat mapping methodologies and techniques used locally to generate spatial data on habitats. The survey was done by EEA in cooperation with the European Topic Centers (ETCs), among other contributors (e.g. Biodiversa+). Target responders were the local experts directly engaged in habitat mapping. The data collection phase of the survey was carried out in 2023. The compilation of the received feedback was performed in the first quarter of 2024. The survey resulted in full or partial responses from seventeen countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Serbia, Spain, and Sweden). The survey provides insights into current habitat mapping approaches (classical mapping, machine-learning), nomenclatures used (EUNIS, MAES, CLC), the data sources used in the mapping process (satellite data, aerial survey, field observations, other in-situ and ancillary data), and many other aspects.
