This publication contains the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages, adopted in New York in 1979 and in force for Canada in 1989. It establishes international legal obligations to prevent, criminalize, and punish the taking of hostages and to promote cooperation among states in the prosecution and extradition of offenders.
