Uniform Images by Herbert Marxen

Description

Herbert Marxen, who was born in Flensburg on 27 January 1900, gained some fame in the Weimar Republic as a freelance collaborator for the satire magazine Simplicissimus. However, his work as a freelance artist, graphic artist and cartoonist was seldom original, which is why he acted quite ambivalently in the choice of his clients after the National Socialists took power: For example, at the end of the 1930s he also offered his drawings to the nettle, the satire leaf of the NSDAP, although he had previously warned — like many of his colleagues — about fascism. Although he suffered from NSDAP reprisals through his two-year work in the magazine Jugend, which expressed itself in the confiscation of 200 hand drawings and culminated in expulsion from the Imperial Chamber of Fine Arts, Marxen conducted numerous historical uniform studies. Although he was prohibited from working as an artist, he painted watercolours based on careful preliminary sketches showing German and Schleswig-Holstein soldiers of the 19th century, as well as German and Danish uniforms from the wars of 1848/52 and 1864. After the end of the war, Marxen desperately tried to recover the images confiscated by Gestapo officials or to be compensated for their loss. Investigations to compensate for this damage continued until 1952. This year, he suffered a stroke, probably due to the nerve-wracking procedure at the compensation chamber, in which he died a short time later. Only thumbnails are linked in the metadata.
