LGRB-BW INSPIRE LED: Historical earthquakes from 1900 to 1993 (Natural Risk Zone: Observed Events) – Dataset
Description
The historical earthquake catalogue edited by the Land Earthquake Service contains information on earthquakes in and around Baden-Württemberg, at this level from 1900 to 1993. The map shows natural (tectonic) and induced earthquakes in the region 47.3°N to 50.0°N and 7.2°E to 10.75°E, which have either reached a magnitude equal to or greater than 3 or an intensity of IV equal to and can therefore be regarded as potentially noticeable. The term “induced earthquakes” summarises non-natural seismic events. These include, for example, mining, i.e. earthquakes in the area of active or open mine buildings, for example in the Saarland coalfield. Further induced earthquakes are related to the extraction of raw materials from drilling, i.e. oil, natural gas or geothermal heat extraction or pressing liquids or gases into the subsurface. Quarry blasts and other events such as rock falls etc. are not included in this illustration. Since many of the earthquakes do not have magnitudes due to lack of reliable instrumental data, only two classes are distinguished: Earthquakes where no damage is likely to have occurred, and those that should have caused damage to the best of our knowledge and belief. A large number of sources were used in the creation of the catalogue. The corresponding authorship or responsible agency is listed in each case.
