Renewable energy; consumption by energy source, technology and application
Description
This table provides figures on the gross final consumption (absolute and relative) of renewable energy. Renewable energy is energy from wind, hydropower, sun, soil, outdoor air heat and biomass. It is energy from natural processes that is constantly replenished. The data can be broken down by energy source/technology and by application (electricity, heat and transport).
Gross final consumption of renewable energy as a percentage of total gross final consumption is used as a target for European and national renewable energy policies.
The total gross final consumption (the denominator used to calculate the percentage of renewable energy per ‘Source/Technology’) can be found in the table as ‘Total, including non-renewable’ with energy application ‘Total’.
The gross final consumption for the ‘Electricity’ and ‘Heat’ energy applications is also available in the table. This allows the percentages of the different techniques per energy application to be calculated; these values are not shown in the table.
The gross final consumption for ‘Transport’ is not shown in the table due to the complexity behind its calculation. More information can be found in the annual publication Renewable energy in the Netherlands.
This table focuses on the share of renewable energy according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive. Under this Directive, countries can apply an administrative transfer by purchasing renewable energy from countries that have consumed more renewable energy than the agreed target. For 2020, the Netherlands has implemented such a rethink by purchasing renewable energy from Denmark. This transfer has been made visible in this table as a separate energy source/technology and two totals have been included; a total with and a total without statistical transfer.

The figures in this table are final until 2021, the figures for 2022 are further provisional and the figures for 2023 are provisional.

Figures on co-fermentation of manure and other biogas for total energy applications have been recovered for 2021 and 2022. The final energy consumption of unsustainable biogas (according to RED II) was wrongly included in the gross final consumption of these biogas species. Figures on total biogas, total biomass and total renewable energy were correct and have remained the same.
Changes as of 17 November 2023:
Figures for 2021 have been updated and have definitive status. 2022 figures have been updated. The new energy carrier ‘Total, including non-renewable’ has been added since 1990. From 2022, the energy carrier 'Biokerosine' has been added.
Changes as of 2 June 2023:
Provisional figures for 2022 have been added. As of reporting year 2021, new sustainability criteria for solid and gaseous biomass consumed in installations above a certain power limit apply under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (REDII). Only biomass that meets these criteria is included in the figures for 2021 and beyond.
Changes as of 8 February 2023
The figures for co-firing and co-firing biomass in power stations have been changed for 2021.
Discussions with RVO, which ensures the sustainability of subsidised solid biomass for energy applications, have shown that 100% of the solid biomass used for co-firing and co-firing in 2021 meets RED II criteria for sustainability of biomass. As a result, the gross final consumption of biomass for co-firing and co-firing is 14 PJ higher than in the December 2022 update and the share of renewable energy is 0.7 percentage points higher.
RED II is the revised EU Renewable Energy Directive that came into force in 2021.

Further provisional figures for 2021 have been added.
Only solid and gaseous biomass that meets the sustainability criteria of the renewed EU Renewable Energy Directive (REDII) has been taken into account to calculate the gross final consumption of these energy sources in 2021.
Figures from 2020 and earlier have been calculated according to RED I and are no longer adjusted in accordance with the agreement with Eurostat. This can create inconsistencies with other tables where updates are made.
When will there be new figures:
Preliminary figures on gross final consumption of renewable energy in general for the previous year are published in May each year. Preliminary figures for the previous year are published each year in June.
In December, all figures on the consumption of renewable energy in the previous year are published. These figures remain provisional, with final figures appearing in December of the second year after the year under review. The most important (expected) changes between further provisionally in December and finally a year later are the figures on solar power. The figures on the share of total energy consumption in the Netherlands can also be changed by making updated figures on total energy consumption available.
