Portrait of Swiss SMEs, 2011-2018
Description
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone of the Swiss economy. They account for more than 99 % of all market economy enterprises and over two thirds of total employment. The Statistics of the Corporate Structure (STATENT) of the Federal Office of Statistics (BFS) provides detailed figures and draws a meaningful portrait of Swiss SMEs. The share of SMEs varies widely by industry and region. In the integration of SMEs into the international market, the size of the company and the membership of a group of companies play an important role. Between 2011 and 2018, the share and spatial distribution of SMEs remained stable. However, the average size of SMEs tends to decline. It should also be noted that SMEs are mostly specialised in certain sectors of the economy and focus on urban centres.
