Medically trained; employment position, job, specialism, since 1999
Description
This table shows the number of medically trained people (certified health care providers who are registered in the BIG register), their employment status and position in the workplace in a reporting year.
The medically trained are divided into a number of professions, including the specialisms per profession, on the basis of the BIG register.
Figures are broken down by age and gender.
Medically qualified persons whose employment status is unknown or who are known not to have lived or worked in the Netherlands at the reference date are included in the table as separate groups. By adding these groups, the population of medically qualified people matches the number of medically qualified people from the BIG register itself.
Medically trained people can have multiple powers. As a result, the sum of the details may differ from the total.
In 2014, there was a sharp decrease in the number of registered nurses, midwives and physiotherapists in the BIG register. This is the result of a mandatory re-registration and stricter work experience requirements.
In 2017, there was a decrease in the number of registered dentists, pharmacists, healthcare psychologists and psychotherapists as a result of mandatory re-registration.
In 2018, there was a decrease in basic doctors as a result of compulsory re-registration.
In 2019, the number of registered nurses, midwives and physiotherapists decreased again as a result of the 5 yearly re-registration introduced in 2014.
In 2021, the classification of nursing specialists was adjusted. All nursing specialists registered in 2020 in the specialisms acute care or intensive care have been converted into the new specialism general health care (AGZ) in the BIG register as of 2021. In addition, a large part of the nursing chronic care has also been transferred to nurse AGZ as of 2021.

The figures in this table are final, except for the most recent year; These are provisional.
The reference point used in a reporting year is from 2012 the last Friday before Christmas. For previous reporting years, the reference point is the last Friday in September.
Changes as of 29 March 2024:
- Figures for reporting year 2022 have been added and reporting year 2021 has been finalised.
Changes as of 12 May 2023:
- As of reporting year 2021, the new specialism nurse general health care (AGZ) has been added.
- For the reporting years 2013 to 2020, a correction has been made to the variable 'position in the employment'. The category 'employee and self-employed' has been revised upwards. A DGA job (director of a large shareholder who pays himself wages) and as a main job in regular employment was wrongly not counted in the category 'employee and self-employed' but in the category 'employee'. In addition, salaried employment next to a DGA main job was ignored and ended up with 'self-employed'. To illustrate the effect: in 2015 there are 20 thousand active medical specialists, of which first 2230 were under 'employee and self-employed' and now 2465 (+10%), in the category 'employee' there are 120 fewer (-1.3%) and in the category 'self-employed' 115 fewer (-1.5%). The figures for 2013 have not been adjusted because they were built with other software.
For 2013 and 2014, a correction was also made to the variable 'number of employment relationships'. This has been revised downwards by using more recent data on 'other work' per person. To illustrate the effect: in 2013, there were 18 thousand active medical specialists, of whom 3555 had two employment positions and 410 three or more. Now this is 2785 (-28%) and 315 (-30%) respectively. For 2015 and later, the 'number of employment relationships' has remained (almost) unchanged. The variables 'number of employment relationships' and 'position in the work environment' do have some points of attention in terms of interpretation, see the explanatory notes to the variable.
When will there be new figures?
In the first quarter of 2025, figures for reporting year 2023 will be added and 2022 will become final.
