WMS NW Prussian map recording 1 : 25 000, new recording 1891-1912

Description

Over a period of almost 50 years since the beginning of the country recording, the original recordings themselves had not been duplicated due to the lack of military and civilian interest. Only around 1860 did the interest change from the civilian side. Particularly from the mining side, there was a real desire for maps on a scale of 1: 25.000. From 1868, the General Staff made these maps available to the Prussian Ministry of Commerce, which were originally intended to be used only for the derivation of follow-up standards. However, since the now published map sheets had already been taken up between 1836-1850 and did not enter the market until 20 years later without further updates, they were rejected in some parts of Prussia. In the aftermath, the call for current cards became more and more urgent. The foundation stone for the new recording was thus laid. From 1875, the entire Prussian territory was once again included, now in the unit of measurement agreed by the International Meter Convention of 1875. From the original measuring table blades, only the blade cut, the projection and the scale were taken over. The terrain was no longer reproduced in a hatch, but for the first time in the form of contour lines, whereby a level area called normal-zero was introduced as a reference point for a uniform height indication throughout Germany. Compared to the original photograph, the modern cartographic design principles can be clearly seen in this new photograph, such as the structure of the network of paths, the representation and limitation of vegetation, the reproduction of the administrative districts, as well as the inscription and the leaf edge, which still characterize the content and appearance of the official topographical maps. As a manufacturing process, the engraving on copper or the drawing on lithographic stone was chosen. Originally, the new recording had its own numbering system, which was later adapted to the sheet numbers and sheet names of today's DTK25 for reasons of simplification. - Status: 06.06.2012
