Description

The table contains figures on the use, accounts and licenses of the national digital public library. The Royal Library (KB) provides this service to members of all public local libraries in the Netherlands and the online Library. First of all, the table describes the extent to which the various digital products offered by the national digital public library have been used through the registered accounts. Secondly, as of the year 2015, the number of accounts at the national digital public library has been developed. In addition to the user’s age, this number is also specified by the type of membership: on the one hand, membership at the local library, on the other hand, that of the digital library. The table also shows how many active and inactive accounts there are and how many new accounts have been added and how many have expired. Finally, the table provides insight into the different types of licenses for digital products available to the national digital public library. Most of them relate to e-books, but also licenses that allow access to other digital products (such as courses and audiobooks) are included in the table. These figures are specified by target group and genre as much as possible. As of 2016, information on courses has been included for the first time in the “use” section, and the “accounts” section has for the first time differentiated between different types of membership in the digital library as of 2016. In addition, both active and non-active accounts have been broken down by age of users since 2016. Figures for new and expired accounts were recorded for the first time in 2017. In the “licenses” section, figures were added for the first time in 2016 regarding the audiobooks and the courses. As of 2017, these figures have been further broken down: the licenses for the courses are specified by age, the licenses for the audiobooks are broken down by both age and genre. The latter also applies to the licenses for the VakantieBieb. As of 2019, the offer of courses through the digital library has been discontinued. Since then, no grades have been available on the use, accounts and licenses related to the course offer. There are also no data available on the new and expired digital only memberships. In 2020, a new registration system was put into operation by the KB, which in particular records the account data differently from the previous system. A digital account can also be used since 2020 for both borrowing e-books and borrowing audiobooks (formerly separate accounts were needed). In addition, new applications (such as ThuisBieb) have been deployed to offer the digital products in 2020. Due to these changes, the numbers on accounts are not comparable to the previous series on StatLine. For this reason, the StatLine table was not extended in 2021 to include the preliminary figures for 2020. However, an additional table has been placed on the CBS website with data on the National Digital Public Library. This contains a selection of variables from the StatLine table for the years 2015-2020 (see the link at the bottom of the document). Data available from: 2015-2019. Status of the figures: The figures for 2019 have provisional status. The remaining figures have been definitively established. Amendments as of 28 July 2022: The table has been discontinued. When will the new figures come? The table has been discontinued and moved to the archive. No new figures in the form of a StatLine table will be available.
