Description

The main objective of the project is to develop a long-term monitoring program of the abundance, distribution and density of waterfowl, waterbirds and their habitat in the Yukon. The survey is designed to estimate population trends and abundance for waterfowl (i.e. ducks, geese swans) and other waterbird species (i.e. grebes, loons) that are not being captured by other monitoring programs. General Methods: Waterfowl surveys are flown using a small helicopter (e.g. EC-120 or A-star 350SD) with two or three trained observers and a pilot. We follow standard operating procedures outlined in Roy et al (2022) based on Canadian Wildlife Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1987), and Bordage et al (2017). Flight track and observation data is recorded using mobile mapping software (PC-Mapper Air-borne Inspection/Inventory CMTINC.com (http://www.cmtinc.com/index.html). Observations of individual birds (and other wildlife e.g. mammals) are identified by species and sex, social group/status and total counts are recorded. Site Selection: Survey sites are chosen using the Boreal Optimal Sampling Strategy (BOSS) (Van Wilgenburg et al 2020) which was implemented nationally as a monitoring program for landbirds (i.e. songbirds) by CWS. BOSS uses a 5km diameter hexagon survey grid and is a stratified random sampling design which incorporates spatial balance, habitat type and cost of access.
