Description
150 plant and 575 animal species are found worldwide only in Austria – they are unique treasures: The Endemics of Austria! Thus Austria has the highest share of endemic species in Central Europe and at the same time a high responsibility to protect this diversity! Preserving endemic species and their habitats is a particular challenge for nature conservation. A team of 58 experts has identified Austria's endemic species for the first time, summarising their distribution, biology and endangerment. The results of these studies will be presented in 2009 in a book published by the Carinthian Natural Science Association. The book ‘Endemites – Treasures in Austria’s flora and fauna’ is published by the Carinthia Natural Science Association with the support of the offices of the provincial governments of the federal states, the Austrian Federal Forests, the Ministry of Life and the Federal Environment Agency.
